Bucs get win against No. 20 doubles tandem in rout

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — The fourth-ranked Barry Buccaneers got the 2011 season underway with a 9-0 domination of Northwood on Sunday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Bucs did not surrender a game in five matches, led by Caroline Wendling and Akemi Maehama. Wendling, playing No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles, was perfect as she won 8-0 in doubles with partner Laura Boguet against the tandem of Fiorella Moggia and Andrea Sucre. Wendling came back to beat Priseila Duarte 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Maehama partnered at No. 3 doubles with Liz Vargas to win 8-0 against Kristen Walker and Danielle Miller, and then dispatched Walker 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Julie Stas and Olivia Matuszak picked up the third doubles point, beating the 20th-ranked combo of Duarte and Christine Novackovic 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Mona Mansour also swept her singles match, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Sucre at the No 4 slot.
At No. 6, Vargas bested Miller 6-1, 6-0, while Alex Gwizdoski knocked off Novackovic 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. Angie Werschel, ranked 23rd nationally, closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win against No. 40 Moggia in the No. 1 singles spot.
