WHITTIER, Calif. — Brandeis, ranked No. 28 in Division III, defeated host Whittier 6-3 to kick off its spring portion of the season on Monday. The Judges improved to 3-0 overall on the campaign, while the Poets fall to 1-1.
Brandeis fell behind early, dropping an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles, but rookies Roberta Bergstein and Alexa Katz earned an 8-2 win to knot the score at 1-all. Senior Rachel Rosman and sophomore Faith Broderick gave the Judges the edge headed into singles play with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.
In singles action, the top of the lineup took care of business quickly to clinch the match.
Rosman lost just two games at No. 1 during a 6-2, 6-0 victory while classmate Mackenzie Gallegos won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 to put the Judges on the brink of victory. Broderick clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 slot.
Junior Nina Levine closed the scoring for the Judges with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 rally at No. 6 singles. The Poets earned the last two points of the match at Nos. 4 and 5 with a pair of come-from-behind, three-set wins.
