No. 3 Lynn sweeps No. 8 Vulcans
Fighting Knights remain undefeated after dominant win
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University’s third-ranked women’s tennis team defeated No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania, 9-0, Thursday afternoon at the Perper Tennis Complex. The Fighting Knights improve to 7-0 on the season while the Vulcans fall to 9-4.
The Blue & White took control of the match early with three doubles victories. Eleonora Iannozzi and Ioana Ivan were paired at No. 1 doubles and defeated the 16th ranked duo of Annabel Pieschl and Jade Pondicas, 8-3. The nation’s sixth-ranked combination of Magdalena Ekert and Isabell Raich beat Axelle Fernandez and Anastassiya Zherdeva, 8-1 in the second position. At No. 3 doubles, the local connection of Jessica Yanoff and Roxana Alexandru defeated Franziska Steinhardt and Laurie Navarro, 8-5.
LU was dominant in singles, taking all six matches with four Fighting Knights not allowing an opponent to win more than two games. Iannozzi, the nation’s fifth-ranked player, was one of those four easily taking out Steinhardt 6-1, 6-1 in the second position. Ivan and Aleksandra Vukadinovic beat Pondicas and Navarro by an identical score in the third and sixth flights while Yanoff bested Fernandez 6-0, 6-0.
Ekert, the 11th ranked player in the country defeated No. 20, Pieschl in a battle of ranked players 6-1, 6-3 while Raich came back from 4-3 down in the first set to win the next nine games 6-4, 6-0.
