Chicago advances to ITA final
ST. PETER, Minn. -- Fourth-ranked University of Chicago defeated fifth-ranked Denison 7-2 in the semifinals of the 2011 ITA Division III Women's Team Indoor Championship Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Chicago has reached the ITA title match for the second time in as many years. The Maroons captured second place at last year's event, falling to Emory 6-3 in the final.
Chicago extended its regular season dual match winning streak to 17 and raised its 2011 record to 6-0.
The Maroons took the top four singles spots, including Kendra Higgins (No. 1) and Carmen Vaca Guzman (No. 3) winning in straight sets. The strong singles action came after Chicago swept doubles play, including taking an 8-1 victory at No. 2.
Two-time defending NCAA Division III doubles champions senior Chrissy Hu and Higgins improved to 14-0 this season and have won 34 of their last 35 matches. Vaca Guzman and sophomore Linden Li extended their doubles winning streak to eight matches and improved to 12-2 on the year.
