Clayton State drops top-20 battle
Final team score fell to last match at No. 6 singles
MORROW, Ga. -- Returning to Peach Belt Conference action on Sunday, No. 11 Clayton State dropped a tough 5-4 decision to No. 16 Flagler at Laker Courts.
Clayton State fell to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the league while Flagler improved to 6-2 and 5-1 in the Peach Belt.
The Lakers won one match in doubles and three in singles action, pushing the outcome of the team score down to the final singles contest.
Viktoriya Semyrodenko and Ivana Krommelova prevailed at No. 1 doubles for Clayton State with an 8-6 victory against Flagler’s Lauren Pfeiffer and Nachell Proctor. But the Saints took the next two matches, including a tie-breaker at No. 2.
In singles play, the Lakers received victories from Semyrodenko at No. 1, White at No. 2 and Marie Cercelletti at No. 4. However, Krommelova could not carry the momentum of a first-set victory and dropped a tough 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision to Flagler’s Veronica Figueroa at No. 3 while Martina Dedaj fell in straight sets to Deon Miller at the fifth spot.
The contest came down to No. 6 singles, where Clayton State’s Charlotte Fabricius fell 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 to the Saints’ Rachel Gould.
