No. 5 West Florida victorious again
Higa clinches match for Argonauts with straight-set victory
PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 5 West Florida (14-9, 4-0 GSC) defeated Delta State, 7-2, today at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex. While both teams are in the Gulf South Conference (GSC), UWF is in the East Division and Delta State is in the West. Thus, the match does not count in conference standings. With the win, UWF has recorded three consecutive victories.
UWF won all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 position, Jacqueline March and Luiza Sonnervig defeated Laura Mongin and Erin Teivans, 8-1. Caitlyn Baines and Taylor Brewster, who are the No. 5 ranked doubles duo in the South Region, tallied an 8-4 victory against Amandine Gourgeues and Lucia Laws at the No. 2 line. Argonauts Yana Bokareva and Hannah Durham defeated Hidemi Mayeshiro and Maria Moya Morales, 8-1, at No. 3.
Luiza Sonnervig put UWF up 4-0 when she recorded a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Laws at the No. 2 singles position. UWF junior Naomi Higa clinched the victory for the Argonauts with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Teivans at No. 4. Brewster defeated Mongin, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 line. Delta State recorded its first point of the day when Mayeshiro defeated Jessica Hsu, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot. Gourgues’ 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory against March at No. 3 made the score 6-2, UWF. In the final match to finish, UWF freshman Durham defeated Moya Morales, 7-6, 6-3.
