MONTGOMERY, Ala. — No. 7 West Florida defeated North Alabama 5-0 on Sunday at Lagoon Park to win the Gulf South Conference championship, marking the team’s 11th total conference title and its second in three years. The GSC championship is also the 58th in school history across all sports, which matches Troy for the most all-time in the league’s 40-year history.

The Argonauts started with wins in all three doubles matches, led by No. 21 Taylor Brewster and Caitlyn Baines winning 8-2 at the No. 1 spot. Luiza Sonnervig and Jacqueline March  won at the No. 2 spot 8-6, and Yana Bokareva and Naomi Higa won 8-5 at the third spot.

In singles, Sonnervig was the first to claim victory, a 6-0, 6-3 win over Mackenzie Bishop at the No. 2 spot. Needing just one more win to clinch the championship, Baines defeated Bruna Vieira 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

The 11th GSC championship for women’s tennis is the most for any sport at UWF.
