Wash U. moving onto UAA semis
BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis picked up a 5-4 win against the University of Rochester in the 2011 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship quarterfinals on Friday.
The victory avenges a 5-4 loss the Bears suffered at the hands of Rochester in last year’s UAA quarterfinals in Cleveland and sets up a semifinal matchup between Washington and No. 3 Emory University on Saturday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis.
Washington and Rochester split the first two completed doubles matches on Friday, leaving the No. 2 doubles match to provide the crucial 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Paige Madara and Corinne Rauck beat Jamie Bow and Janice Zhao, 8-2, to give Washington U. a 1-0 lead, but Evelyn Qin and Natalie Tingir fell, 8-5, to Lia Weiner and Frances Tseng in the No. 1 match.
WUSTL's Elise Sambol and Theresa Petraskova broke a 5-5 tie with Alexandra Goodman and Danielle Shreck at second doubles by winning three of the final four games to take the match 8-6 and deliver the point for the Bears.
In singles action, Petraskova and Madara quickly pushed the Washington lead to 4-1 thanks with straight-set wins. Petraskova beat Bow 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 singles while Madara was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Zhao in the No. 6 match.
However, Washington's victory would not come easy as Tseng won at second singles, taking the match 6-2, 6-1, versus Qin. Weiner defeated Tingir, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1 singles, and Shreck defeated Sambol, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), 10-6 at No. 5.
But Kate Klein would clinch the win for Washington by picking up a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Goodman at No. 3 singles.
