Flagler topples Georgia College
Pfeiffer clinches match for Lady Saints with 6-4, 7-5 victory
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Lauren Pfeiffer's 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles against Bertille Lion allowed No. 10 Flagler College to edge No. 26 Georgia College, 5-3, to advance to the Southeast Region final at Bacon Park.
Pfeiffer broke Lion's serve in the first and second sets to clinch the match for the Lady Saints.
Flagler (12-6) earns a date with three-time defending national champion Armstrong Atlantic State on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. The winner advances to the Round of 16 at Altamonte Springs, Fla., from May 11-14.
Flagler took a pivotal 2-1 lead after doubles play. The duo of Deon Miller and Gabby Scammacca defeated Kelly Edwards and Lisa Setyon, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles for the Lady Saints, but Lion and Kayla Barksdale claimed an 8-4 win against Pfeiffer and Rachel Gould to even the match at 1-1. The Lady Saints' Veronica Figueroa and Jennifer Saviano then collected an 8-6 win versus May Johnson and Michelle Lingner, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.
Singles saw each team win three of the first sets competed. Lingner's 6-0, 6-0 win against Scammacca tied the match up at 2-2, but Miller knocked off Kim Lochner, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles for Flagler to put the Lady Saints back up, 3-2.
Saviano then gave Flagler some much needed breathing room by beating Barksdale, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3 singles, but Setyon won, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, making the score 4-3 to set up the action on the final court.
Georgia College played in its 17th consecutive NCAA Championship and finished its season at 16-9.
