Armstrong Atlantic moves on
Sweep leaves Indiana (Pa.) in the dust after first Round of 16 bid
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Three-time defending Division II national champion Armstrong Atlantic State moved one step closer to a fourth title in a row with a 5-0 win against Indiana (Pa.) in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.
The No. 4 Lady Pirates (27-2) advance to face No. 5 Hawaii Pacific, which was a 5-1 winner against previously undefeated Grand Valley State. Indiana (Pa.) finished its season with its first trip to the NCAA Round of 16 and a 21-7 record.
In the first meeting between the two teams, the Lady Pirates jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after doubles.
The fifth-ranked duo of Alida Muller-Wehlau defeated Katie Eaton and Tabtip Louhabanjong 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel blanked Ranvita Mahto and Kelly McBryan 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Aleksandra Filipovski and Jessica Gardefjord finished the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win against Emilia Osborne and Alex Ballard.
The Lady Pirates clinched the match with 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 5 singles from No. 49-ranked Henry versus McBryan. AASU also got a win from 47th-ranked Joanna Szymczyk against Ballard at No. 6 singles.
