Bucs drop only seven points during five victories
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Second-ranked Barry rolled past the Cameron Aggies 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Wednesday evening. Barry surrendered only seven games in the five wins.
In doubles action, the Bucs took all three matches, winning in near-record time. At the top flight, the second-ranked team of Angie Werschel and Barbi Pocza beat No. 15 Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber 8-2.
At No. 2 doubles, No. 22 Laura Boguet and Alex Gwizdowski beat Sara Londono and Elvira Sholles 8-4. Though the Bucs and Aggies split the first eight games, the Bucs won the final four to win the set.
In the third doubles, Julie Stas and Olivia Matuszak blanked Antonio Moberg and Florencia Tornero 8-0.
In singles competition, the Bucs only needed two points to take the win. Boguet earned the Buccaneers’ fifth point as she beat Londono in near perfection, 6-1, 6-0.
Third-ranked Pocza finished it out for the Bucs. Pocza was impeccable against No. 19 Amanda Moberg, winning 6-0, 6-0.
The Bucs led in three of the remaining four singles matches. Caroline Wendling, ranked No. 44, was up 6-1, 2-1 on Sholles in the third flight. Matuszak led Londono 6-0, 4-1 at No. 4, and Mona Mansour was up a set on Florencia Torento 6-1, 5-0.
With the win, the Bucs move on to face 27th-ranked Concordia in the quarterfinals. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
