ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – No. 2-ranked Barry upended No. 4-ranked Armstrong Atlantic 5-3 to reach the final of the 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship on Friday afternoon at Sanlando Park.

The win advances the Buccaneers (25-1) to their second title appearance in school history. In the championship match, the Buccaneers will challenge Sunshine State Conference rival Lynn.

In a battle of top-5 teams, Barry staked an early advantage as it grabbed two of three on the doubles side.

Barry’s No.22-ranked tandem of Alex Gwizdowski and Laura Boguet earned a difficult first point at No.2 doubles as they downed Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel 8-6. The Bucs continued their winning ways at third flight doubles as Julie Stas and Olivia Matuszak turned back Aleksandra Flipovski and Joanna Szymczyk 8-4.

The Bucs couldn’t come away with the sweep. The No. 3-ranked team of Barbora Krtickova and Alida Muller-Wehlau upset the No. 2-ranked pair of Barbi Pocza and Angie Wershel 8-4 to cut the lead in half moving into doubles.

Singles was a classic back-and-forth dual, but eventually saw Barry set up the All-SSC national final.

It was the Pirates who posted the first point in singles before Wendling tied the match at two apiece. The Bucs bounced back to regain the lead at No.5 singles as Boguet turned back Henry in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

After Matuszak put the Buccaneers on the brink with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Ronel, the Pirates used one last gasp to keep their chances at defending their crown alive. At No. 2 singles, No. 11 Kritckova proved to be superior in her contest with No. 36 Werschel, dowing her opponent 6-3, 6-4.

Barbi Pocza, the Buccaneers' top flight singles player, ousted No. 7 Muller-Wehlau in consecutive sets to win the match and put Barry in the final. Pocza edged Muller-Wehlau in the first set, 7-6 (7-5), before overpowering her 6-2 in the second set.
