Lynn continues run toward title
Fighting Knights cruise, keep sights set on first title since 2001
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – No.3-ranked Lynn punched its ticket to the 2011 NCAA national championship match on Friday afternoon, shutting out No.12 Clayton State 5-0 during semifinal action at the Division II Tennis Championships at Sanlando Park.
Aiming for their first national championship since 2001, the Fighting Knights will take on Sunshine State Conference powerhouse Barry on Saturday, May 14.
Controlling the match from the onset, the Fighting Knights scooted out to a 3-0 doubles lead.
The No.11 tandem of Magdalena Ekert and Isabell Raich opened the afternoon match in impressive fashion, blanking the duo of Katie White and Marie Cercelletti 8-0. Jessica Yanoff and Andrea Berkova increased the advantage to 2-0 as they bounced the team of Martina Dedaj and Jessica Budd 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. The Fighting Knights’ No.4-ranked duo of Eleonora Iannozzi and Ioana Ivan completed the sweep as they breezed past the No.12 pair of Viktoriya Semyrodenko and Ivana Krommelova 8-4.
With the championship match in their sights, the Fighting Knights refused to let up in singles action as they received a pair of astonishing performances out of their Nos. 2 and 5 singles spots.
No.9-ranked Iannozzi was dominant from the beginning as she eased her way to a straight sets 6-1, 6-0 victory. After taking the first set 6-2, Vukadinovic solidified the contest for Lynn as advanced Lynn to the final with a 6-1 second set win.
