CLAREMONT, Calif. — Chicago defeated Denison 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory sends the Maroons (20-3) into the national semifinals for the third time in as many seasons where they will face three-time defending NCAA champion Williams. The Ephs (20-3) blanked host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-0 in quarterfinal play Tuesday.
Chicago swept the doubles competition, getting wins from senior Chrissy Hu and junior Kendra Higgins at No. 1 in an 8-3 victory, junior Carmen Vaca Guzman and sophomore Linden Li at No. 2 by an 8-1 mark while juniors Aswini Krishnan and Jennifer Kung won 8-5 at No. 3.
A 6-4, 6-1 win from Krishnan at No. 6 singles gave the Maroons a 4-0 lead, before Vaca Guzman ended the match with a 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 3. Vaca Guzman has won the clinching match in all three of Chicago’s NCAA postseason victories this season.
Chicago defeated Williams 6-3 at Emory’s Fab Five Tournament back on March 25. In last year’s NCAA semifinals, the Ephs edged Chicago 5-4.
