CLAREMONT, Calif. — Williams advanced to Thursday’s NCAA Championship match with a 5-0 victory against Chicago.
The win avenges a 6-3 loss to the same Chicago team in a contest that took place two months ago to the day as part of the Emory Fab 10 Tournament. With Thursday’s match, the Ephs have the opportunity to capture their fourth consecutive NCAA title. They will meet rival Amherst at 1 p.m. ET.
Once again, the Ephs were fueled by strong doubles play, giving them the early 3-0 lead. After securing wins at the first and third doubles slots, it looked as though the Maroons were going to take a win at No. 2. On the edge of defeat, the pairing of Kristen Alotta and Taylor French turned in the gutsiest performance of the day. Trailing 7-4, the pair of juniors battled back to seize the victory.
Moving to singles the Ephs made quick work of their foes from the Windy City with victories by Caroline Capute and Nikki Reich.
Capute, like she did in the quarterfinal contest, captured the fourth match victory from her spot at six singles. She coasted to the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Chicago’s Aswini Krishnan.
Sealing the team win and a berth in the Championship match was senior Nikki Reich. Reich, playing in the five singles slot, defeated Chrissy Hu 6-3, 6-3.
The Ephs will look to secure their fourth straight NCAA Championship beginning at 1pm ET tomorrow afternoon.
