MIAMI SHORES, Fla.The Barry Buccaneers stamped their tickets to the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships with a 5-0 win over Florida Southern in the final of the Southeast Region-I womens tennis Tournament at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Friday.

The Buccaneers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in doubles with Carole Steinhauser and Helen Wisneiwski posting an 8-0 win over FSCs Megan Fincham and Lindsey Willis at number three. Ana Maria Zuleta and Ildiko Csordas made almost as short work of Linda Mrkic and Lara Alcobendas at number one winning 8-2.

I think we played very well, Barry coach Dr. George Samuel said. We got all the doubles which kind of set the momentum going in to the singles. I think it brought Florida Southern down a little having to come from that far back.

But the number two double proved to be a fight. Barrys Greta Trotman and Kristin Danielson just out to a 4-1 lead, but the Mocs Lidia Gandarias and Barbara Oria came back to even the match at 7-7. After holding on to serve to go up 8-7, Trotman and Danielson had three different break points before finally coming away with the 9-7 win.

They (Gandarias and Oria) started playing much more consistent, Danielson said. They moved back to the baseline and started hitting more lobs. We just tried to stay focused and aggressive at the net. Then we played more drop shots to move them around.

In singles, the Bucs captured the bottom two flights in rapid succession. Steinhauser blitzed Fincham 6-0, 6-0 at number six and Danielson closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Willis at number five.

The Bucs will now travel to the NCAA Division II National Tennis Tournament at Sanlando Park in Orlando, Fla. They will face the Indians of Midwestern State in the round of 16 at the nationals. MSU bumped off the St. Edwards Hilltoppers 5-1 in the Central Region-II final. The Bucs and Indians will face off on Wednesday, May 11 the national championship match on Saturday, May 14.

Its really nice to come in here as a freshman and get to go to the nationals, Danielson said. Weve worked really hard all season and this is a nice reward.
