Carthage College advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Carleton College in St. Peter, Minnesota on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Reds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the doubles duo of Amanda Sta. Romana and Alex Jackson defeated Diane Danforth and Abby Beggs 8-2 at the #2 position. Carthage then upped its lead to 2-0 when Kelly Mikkila and Elizca Buys beat Sarah Russell and Eryn Koch 8-3 at the #1 spot. However, Carleton pulled to within 2-1 when Genevieve Philp and Shelley Getzendanner won 9-8 (7-4) over Erika Lambros and Brooke Braastad.
In singles action, the Lady Reds quickly extended their lead to 3-1 as Alex Jackson beat Abby Beggs 6-1, 6-1 at the #4 position. Carthage then closed out the match when Elizca Buys beat Genevieve Philp 6-4, 6-2 at #2, and Amanda Sta. Romana defeated Diane Danforth 6-3, 6-2 at the #3 spot. The #1, #5, and #6 singles matches were all abandoned after the Lady Reds had won 5-1. At #1, Sarah Russell of Carleton was leading 4-6, 6-4, 1-0, while at #5 Erin Powers of Carthage had won the first set 7-5, but was behind 4-3 in the second set. At #6, Eryn Koch of Carleton was leading 7-6 (7-4), 5-3.
Gustavus (29-2) will now play Carthage (21-6) on Sunday at noon. Gustavus will be looking to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Team Championship for the 17th consecutive year. The winner of Sundays match will advance to the NCAA Team Championship quarterfinals, which will take place May 18-20 at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
