ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.The fifth-ranked Barry Buccaneers (23-2) outlasted the battle-weary Argonauts of #4 West Florida 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2005 NCAA Division II National Tennis Tournament at Sanlando Park on Thursday.

The Argonauts (24-6), who defeated Northwood (Mich.) earlier in the day in a match postponed by weather, started out strong, taking two of the three doubles. The third flight team of Diana Olave and Giulianna Oblitas took an 8-1 win over Barrys Carole Steinhauser and Helen Wisneiwski, but the Bucs Greta Trotman and Kristin Danielson evened the match with an 8-4 win at number two over Paola Arevalo and Pilar Cortes. At number one, the sixth-ranked team of Nicole Plikat and Eva Papastratides gutted out an 8-6 win over Barrys Ildiko Csordas and Ana Maria Zuleta.

It was a different story in singles, however, with four of the six matches going to third sets and one of the others going to tie-breakers in both sets. Barry quickly evened the match as #16 Trotman grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 win over #45 Arevalo. Danielson rebounded from a first set loss to defeat Olave 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 to put the Bucs up 3-2. Steinhauser needed tiebreakers to beat Oblitas 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7) at number six. Csordas, ranked 12th, put in the clincher, upsetting #8 Plikat 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at number one.

The win is the Bucs 13th in a row and lands then in the national semifinals for the fourth time in five years. They will face defending national champions, BYU-Hawaii, and their 129-match winning streak, in the semifinals on Friday at 2:00 pm.
