AUSTIN, Texas The 10th-ranked Texas womens tennis team won the doubles point and then collected straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 4, 6 singles en route to a 4-1 victory over Texas A&M in the second round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Longhorns improved to 22-5, while the Aggies ended their season at 16-13.
Texas, the No. 11 seed in the Tournament, advanced to the NCAA Championships Round of 16 for the 18th time in school history and will face No. 6 seed Georgia Tech on Thursday, May 19 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., on the University of Georgia campus.
We were definitely the hunted today, head coach Jeff Moore said. And getting through a match like this against Texas A&M was great for the team. I think we can now head to Athens and play more aggressively. This team is capable of getting on a roll and playing great tennis. They always fight together and thats what it is going to take to make it very deep into the Tournament.
Texas took an early 1-0 advantage after posting a pair of 8-3 wins at the second and third doubles positions. Junior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and freshman Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) dropped Seva Iwinski and Helga Vieira at No. 3 before sophomore Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and junior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) downed Anna Blagodarova and Tiffany Clifford at No. 2.
The Longhorns then scored the first two points in singles to increase their advantage to 3-0. Marovic, ranked 92nd nationally, defeated Walker 7-5, 6-2 at the second spot, while sophomore Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) topped Maria Druss 6-4, 6-1 at the sixth spot.
Texas A&Ms lone point of the match was recorded by 86th-ranked Anna Lubinsky, who posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over 84th-ranked junior Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) at No. 3 singles.
The match was decided at No. 4 where Texas A&Ms Anna Blagodarova threatened a comeback in the second set before hitting her shot into the net at match point, giving junior Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) the 6-2, 6-4 win.
