May 15, 2005

ATHENS, Ga. The University of Georgia womens tennis team defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-0 to earn its eighth consecutive berth in the round of 16. Georgia sophomore Shadisha Robinson clinched the match for the Bulldogs with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Danielle Wiggins at the No. 1 spot.

We played a great match today, said Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace. South Carolina played hard and made us earn every point. This was good for us because now we know we can win a tough match.

Georgia took a 1-0 lead by winning two straight doubles matches. Robinson teamed up with Caroline Basu to ease past Wiggins and Miranda Gutierrez, 8-1. Natalie Frazier and Jitka Schonfeldova then defeated Fallon Koon and Laura Ganzer, 8-4, to close out the doubles point.

In singles action, Basu gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Ganzer. Kelly Hyndman then made it a 3-0 Georgia edge on the back of a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Gutierrez, to set Robinson up for the clinch.

I really appreciate the crowd coming out today, said Wallace. Especially after yesterday when everyone waited an extra couple of hours just to see us get rained out. They came back today and that support was really instrumental in helping us get through the match and giving us that extra boost we needed.

The Bulldogs will take on Cal-Berkley at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 19.

Cal is a traditionally a very good team, said Wallace. Theyve had a good second half of the season and always have good success.
