PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Stanford's Anne Yelsey upset top-seeded Jennifer Magley of Florida in the first round Thursday at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club. This event is the first of three national championships during the 2005-06 collegiate tennis season.

Stanford's Yelsey, a junior from Newport Beach, Calif., beat Florida's Magley 6-2, 6-2. Magley is the first No. 1 seed to lose in the opening round in the tournament's 23-year history. Yelsey was one of three players from defending NCAA champion Stanford to advance to Friday's second round. Also notching wins today for the Cardinal were Alice Barnes and Theresa Logar.

All told, six of the top eight seeds registered first round wins in singles today. Also advancing were: No. 2 Suzi Babos of California, No. 3 Nicole Leimbach of TCU, No. 4 Robin Stephenson of Alabama, No. 5 Daniela Bercek of Duke, No. 7 Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech and No. 8 Barnes of Stanford.

Second round and quarterfinal singles take place on Friday. Quarterfinal doubles matches will also be played. Saturday and Sunday's matches will be broadcast live by Ken Thomas on www.RadioTennis.com.

Three of the top four seeds opened with wins in doubles. Top-seeded Shadisha Robinson and Caroline Basu beat TCU's Leimbach and Ana Cetnik 8-2. Second-seeded Christian and Catrina Thompson of Notre Dame shutout Gabrielle Duch and Nellyse Etienne 8-0.
