West Regional: Hawaii-Hilo 5, Cal State-Los Angeles 3May 3, 2007

Laie, HIUH-Hilo defeated Cal State-Los Angeles today, 5-3, in the opening round of the NCAA II West Regional Womens Tennis Tournament held on the campus of host Brigham Young University-Hawaii. The Vulcans, ranked 31st nationally, outlasted the 40th-ranked Golden Eagles in a very close match to earn the right to face the top-ranked host school tomorrow for the right to advance to the national finals in Florida next week.

UH-Hilo claimed two of the doubles matches, taking an 8-4 win at the top spot and eking out a 9-7 win at number two. The Golden Eagles scored an 8-5 win at number three doubles.

The Vulcans went ahead 3-1 when Susan Souksavath took a 6-2, 6-1 win at number four singles. However, Cal State-LA bounced right back to tie the score at 3-3 with straight-set wins from Jennifer Avila and Bojana Ducanovic at number five and number six singles. Nicole Campbell then fought off a second-set blister to put the Vulcans on top 4-3 with a 6-1, 6-4 win at number two singles. Carolina Ardila provided the winning point for UH-Hilo by finishing off a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win at number three singles. The number one singles match between Christie Pagatpatan of UH-Hilo and Krishana De Silva of CSU-LA was tied at 5-5 in the second set with Pagatpatan holding a one-set lead when play was halted.

UH-Hilo will face BYU-Hawaii at 1:00 pm HST tomorrow for the regional title with the winner advancing to the national tournament in Altamonte Springs, Florida on May 9-12.

Laie, HIThe top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii womens tennis team defeated UH-Hilo today, 5-0, in the NCAA II West Regional Womens Tennis Tournament and will advance to the national championships next week in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Seasiders, now 29-0 for the season, won all three doubles matches handily and then got 6-0, 6-0 wins at both of the top two singles spots to coast to the victory.

Anna Anikanova and Shenley Searing posted an 8-0 whitewash at number three doubles while Yuliya Ustyuzhanina and Dori Magas were winning 8-1 at the second slot. Jing Jing Liu and Maggie Deng claimed an 8-2 win at number one doubles to give the Seasiders a 3-0 lead going into the singles competition.

Ustyuzhanina and Liu made short work of their matches at number one and number two singles respectively to close out the match and the Seasiders were leading comfortably in the other four singles matches when play was halted.

The Seasiders will open the NCAA II National Tournament on Wednesday against a team from the North Central Region that has yet to be determined.

West Regional: UC San Diego 5, Sonoma State 1May 3, 2007

LA JOLLA, Calif. The 23rd-ranked UC San Diego womens tennis team picked up a 5-1 victory over visiting Sonoma State University in the first round of the NCAA D-II Womens Tennis Championship on Saturday at the Northview Tennis Courts on the UCSD campus. The Tritons improve to 14-8 on the season and advance on to the second round of the tournament where they will meet Hawaii Pacific next Thursday in Oahu, Hawaii. Sonoma States season comes to an end with an 8-10 record.

UCSD jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play, winning by an 8-3 score at the top spot and by an 8-4 margin at the No. 3 slot on the ladder. SSU pulled out a hard-fought 9-7 victory in the middle doubles match for the teams only point of the match.

Marsha Malinow notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles match while her doubles partner, Ina Dan, posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. With a 4-1 lead, the Tritons needed only one more point for the victory and got it from Allison Legakis at No. 5 where she recorded a 7-5, 6-3 margin of victory over Alexis Webb.

The victory advances the Tritons to their seventh-straight second round appearance at the D-II level. Next Thursdays opponent, Hawaii Pacific, received a bye in the first round and will enter the second round match with a 15-4 overall record. HPU handed UCSD an 8-1 defeat earlier this season in La Jolla.
