GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The seventh-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 thriller to No. 17 North Carolina on Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center.

The match started with amazing tennis on the doubles courts, where, after North Carolina captured the No. 3 position, Florida (4-1) continued to battle for the important doubles point. The matches on courts No. 1 and No. 2 needed extra games to decide the victors, as Jessica Alexander and Anastasia Revzina fell 9-7 in the clinching doubles match. The No. 1 match featuring UNC's 15th-ranked Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski and UF's 18th-ranked Megan Alexander and Marrit Boonstra couldn't have been much closer, as the two teams battled to an amazing 30-point tiebreaker, as the tandems combined to save 11 matches points, including eight by UNC, before the Tar Heel pair took the 16-14 breaker to earn the win.

In singles, Boonstra, Revzina and Joanna Mather each claimed victories that kept the Gators close, but in the end it was the crucial doubles point that was the difference.

"We started off way too slow in both singles and doubles. I'm proud of the team for fighting back to give us a chance. We had the lead at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to win the point, but we just didn't close them out,"
UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "We also gave ourselves a chance in singles with making a comeback. We had some individual terrific performances today, but overall I think we can come to the conclusion that we need more of these tough matches.

"We didn't pass this first test, but we got better as the match went along and that's something that we're going to hang our hat on heading into the National Team Indoor Championships next week," Thornqvist continued. "We don’t have any time to sulk, we just need to continue to prepare to compete at the highest level, which is what we'll face later this week."

Florida next travels to Madison, Wis., for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Feb. 13-16. The draw will be announced early in the week.
