Lexington, Va. (May 8, 2009) - The Agnes Scott Tennis Team scored a thrilling victory in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tennis Championships, defeating Grove City College (Pa.) by a margin of 5-4. The Scotties advance to the second round, where they will face Emory University on Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m. on the campus of Washington and Lee University.

After three doubles matches, the Scotties held a 2-1 lead. The No. 1 team of senior Esther Kaplan and first-year Danielle Patton scored a nail-biting 9-8 victory following a 7-4 tiebreaker. Juniors Amanda Chaffin and Nikitris Deloach also scored a 9-8 tiebreaker victory in their No. 3 doubles match.

In singles play, victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 gave the Scotties their decisive 5 match total. Kaplan, senior Lindsey Burdette and Patton each defeated their opponents in two sets.

The victory raised the Scotties record on the season to 14-1, as Grove City bows out with a 14-5 record. Saturday's opponent, Emory (18-4) is ranked number one in the region, and has won five national championships, including four in the last six years.
