PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked sixth nationally, competed in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Championships Saturday, May 9. The Tartans advanced to the finals of the Regional with a 5-0 victory over Ithaca College. The three-day regional is hosted by Carnegie Mellon University. The win moves the Tartans' dual record to 20-2, as the Bombers end their season at 15-8.

Carnegie Mellon took a 3-0 lead following doubles play, marking the 16th time this season the Cardinal and Gray swept doubles. Winning the first point for the Tartans was the duo of sophomore Jennifer Chui (Saratoga, Calif./Monta Vista) and freshman Amanda Wu (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) at third doubles, claiming an 8-2 victory. The tandem of Kelly Hart (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Joaquin) and freshman Courtney Chin (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) finished second at No. 2 doubles while sophomore Ashley Herrick (Amherst, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) and freshman Laura Chen (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) completed the sweep with an 8-2 win at first doubles.

The Tartans finished the match with two straight-set victories at fifth and third singles. Freshman Cze-Ja Tam (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) claimed a 6-2, 6-1, while Chui won 6-2, 6-3.

Carnegie Mellon will face #10 Johns Hopkins University Sunday, May 10 in the Regional final at noon.
