No. 3 Lady Pirates Capture Southeast Region Final, 5-0 Over Clayton State

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 3-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis squad captured the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Southeast Region final with a 5-0 victory over No 11-ranked Clayton State on Saturday morning in Savannah.

The Lady Pirates (24-1), the defending DII national champions, will head to the Round of 16 for the 15th consecutive season, the longest active streak among DII schools. Clayton State (11-7), who advanced to the Round of 16 in 2002, fell short in its bid for a second berth.

Doubles play saw the Lady Pirates pick up three wins to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The No. 2-ranked duo of Martina Beckmann and Alida Muller-Wehlau collected an 8-2 win over No. 9-ranked Viktoriya Semyrodenko and Katie White in a matchup of top 10-ranked doubles duos at No. 1 doubles. No. 7-ranked Gabriella Kovacs and Sona Novakova notched an 8-1 win over Evelin Csizi and Veronika Jasenovcova at No. 2 doubles, then No. 12-ranked Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Marie Cercelletti and Selma Hidass.

AASU added a quick singles point at No. 1 singles when No. 25-ranked White was forced to retire in the second set against top-ranked Novakova, 6-1, 1-0. Henry then clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jasenovcova at No. 6 singles, sending the Lady Pirates to the Round of 16.

The NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships begin on Wednedsay, May 13, at the Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Lady Pirates' first-round opponent will be the second seed from the South Central region, St. Edward's (Texas), who advanced with a 5-1 win over Northeastern State.

Valdosta State Avenges Gulf South Loss With Sweep Over West Florida

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State was able to exact a little revenge against West Florida for the team’s loss in the Gulf South Conference Championship. With a sweep, 5-0, of West Florida, the Lady Blazers move on in the national tournament.

The Lady Blazers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to teams of Raphaelle Durante and Karine Redon, Natali Gumbrecht and Tina Trautmann, and Kristel de Groot and Sonya Haggstrom. The closest doubles match took place at the third spot, with a thrilling 9-7 win for de Groot and Haggstrom. Gumbrecht and Trautmann pulled out another close one, 8-5, while Durante and Redon ran away at the top spot, 8-1.

With the early 3-0 lead, Valdosta State only needed two singles victories. For the second consecutive match, Durante and Redon pulled them out for the Lady Blazers. In the second position Durante won, 6-0, 6-3. Redon pulled the first set in the fifth spot with ease, 6-1, but the second did not come so easy. In the end, Redon won, 6-1, 7-6 (1).

Montana State-Billings Eliminates St. Cloud State From Tournament

Sartell, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University women's tennis (26-9) saw its 2009 season end with a well-played 5-4 loss to Montana State University-Billings in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division II women's tennis Central Regional on Saturday, May 9.  The match was played at the Sartell High School Tennis Complex in Sartell, Minn.  

Montana State Billings will now advance to the 2009 NCAA Division II finals, which will be played on May 13-16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.  The Huskies finish their season with a school record 26 victories, and this marks the fifth time in team history that the Huskies have qualified for NCAA tournament play.

In doubles play, MSUB gained the early advantage in the match with wins at third doubles and second doubles.  SCSU's first doubles duo of Kelly Freese and Jacquelyn Doll earned an 8-4 victory.

In singles play, SCSU evened the score with a 6-1, 6-0 win by Kristie Eull at fifth singles.  Samanatha Boushek made the score 3-2 in favor of the Huskies with a 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth singles.  At third singles, MSUB tied the score with a 7-6, 7-5 victory by Anne-Sophie Tredet over SCSU's Kelly Freese.

At fourth singles, MSUB pushed its lead to 4-3 as Johnna Beatty posted a three-set win over SCSU's Kayla Lenz.  The Huskies pushed the match to its limit as Doll stormed back from a first set loss to gain a big 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over MSUB's Ling Chan.

The stage was set for a dramatic win by Anna Juarez over SCSU's Dawn Olsen.  In a three-hour marathon, Juarez battled back from a first set loss to gain a 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-4 victory over Olsen.
