The No.6-ranked California (PA) women’s tennis team defeated No. 28 Grand Valley State 5-0, Wednesday morning in the Round of 16 at the Women’s Tennis 2010 National Championships from the Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Vulcans sprinted out to a3-0 lead over the Lakers, securing all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Julia Cohen and Jutta Bornefeld upended the tandem of Johnson and Trout by the score of 8-0. Jade Pondicass and Anastassiya Zherdeva added to the lead with an 8-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles, while Axelle Fernandez and Nina Kowalski completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Fecko and Shipman

In singles play, the Vulcans took wins at No. 1 and No.6 singles to finalize the 5-0 win. Cohen provided California with a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win over Hayes in the No. 1 spot. Fernandez added the teams deciding point with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.

With the match secured, the remaining matches went unfinished.

California (PA) advances to the Quarterfinals on Thursday, May 13 against Hawaii-Pacific. The match is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
