The No. 23 University of Redlands women's tennis team silenced the Griffins of Gwynedd-Mercy College (PA) in today's first-round match of the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships by a resounding score of 5-0.

The Bulldogs quickly gained a 3-0 lead in doubles while giving up just three games in the three matches. The No. 2 duo of juniors Rachael Miller (Newport Beach, CA) and Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) shut out their counterparts to give Redlands its first point. The top tandem of seniors Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) and Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) quickly followed suit with their 8-1 showing. Sophomore Nicole Gerentine (Austin, TX) and senior Sutton Anderson (Breckenridge, CO) secured the doubles sweep with their 8-2 victory at No. 3.

In singles, it was much of the same for the Maroon and Gray as Miller and Yoshinaga easily captured wins at No. 2 and No.4, respectively, resulting in the final tally of 5-0. Miller cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 showing, while Yoshinaga provided a 6-1, 6-1 performance.

The Bulldogs (13-9) advance to the second round of the tournament and face off against regional rival, No. 14 Chapman University, on Friday at 11 a.m. The match takes place at Pomona College's Pauley Tennis Complex.
