CLAREMONT, Calif. - The UT Tyler women's tennis team earned a 5-0 win over Whitworth in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday at the Pauley Tennis Complex on the campus of Pomona College.

The Patriots (17-3) took a commanding lead early, sweeping all three doubles points with wins by Ashley Albro/Michelle Hagler, Emily McRae/Sydni Hermsdorf, and Heather Harmon/Lauren Nielsen. The Whitworth duo of Katie Staudinger and Rachel Burns threatened at No. 2 doubles, but McRae and Hermsdorf pulled out the 8-6 win. The margin was 8-1 at No. 2 doubles and 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Lauren Giovaninni at No. 5 singles and Brittany Trich at No. 6 singles won their points to seal the victory for the Patriots.

Giovannini's 6-2, 6-4 win moved her into first all-time at UT Tyler with her 60th win in singles play; including today's win, she has won 11 straight matches.

Whitworth, champion of the Northwest Conference, finished its season with a 19-5 mark.

UT Tyler will face host No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer in the second round at 3 p.m. PDT Friday.
