BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 12-ranked California women's tennis team (19-5, 5-2 Pac-10) advanced to the second round of the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 win over Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Southern (12-6, 8-0 SWAC) at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday, May 14. The Golden Bears earned their four points in just under two hours to draw No. 20 USC in a noon PT second-round match on Saturday, May 15.
Cal claimed its 21st doubles point of the season with wins at courts two and three. Cal's freshman tandem of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson came up with the first victory of the day as they defeated Janelle Mosely and Demetria Woods at court three, 8-0. The doubles point was clinched by the No. 89-ranked team of junior Marina Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz on their 8-1 win over Jo'Vonna Gaines and Carlista Mohammed at court two. Cal's ninth-ranked team of junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova held a 7-2 advantage over Kathryn Curtis and Megan Wiltz at the top court when their match was abandoned.
The Bears claimed victory in the first sets of all six singles matches and went ahead, 2-0, as No. 18-ranked Cossou collected a clean 6-0, 6-0 win over Mosley at court two. Cossou needed just 46 minutes to complete her 29th win of the year. Juricova overcame a strong fight from Wiltz at the top court to uphold her No. 2 national ranking as she came away with a 6-2, 6-0 win. The victory was her 12th straight since March 6 and her team-high 37th overall as she gave Cal a commanding 3-0 lead.
Five minutes after Juricova completed her match, Siwosz clinched the win for the Bears as she took out Curtis, 6-2, 6-1, at the fourth singles court in her 27th singles win of the season. With the victory clinched, matches at courts three, five and six were abandoned.
The Bears now forge ahead to take on a familiar foe in the second round. The Trojans (14-9, 5-3 Pac-10) earned a 4-0 victory of their own earlier in the day as USC defeated No. 55-ranked Sacramento State in the first round. The Women of Troy fell victim to two 5-2 wins by the Bears earlier this season but come into the match boasting a lineup with four ranked singles players.
