ATHENS, Ga. ----- Despite losing the doubles point, the fifth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish knocked off 13th-ranked Tennessee in quarterfinals action of the 2010 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships Saturday night at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The Irish won the first doubles match at one as the third-ranked team of Kristy Frilling and Kali Krisik upset No. 1 Caitlin Whoriskey and Natalie Pluskota, 8-6. But UT came right back with a win on two as No. 30 Rosalia Alda and Zsofia Zubor defeated Cosmina Ciobanu and Shannon Mathews, 8-6. The Lady Vols clinched it on three as Maria Sorbello and Kata Szekely edged Chrissie McGaffigan and Kristen Rafael, 9-8(3).
But the Fighting Irish came back in singles, earning a win at four when Ciobanu defeated Zubor, 6-2, 6-1 to tie it at 1-1. The Lady Vols took back the lead at 2-1 with a win on six as Szekely bested Rafael, 6-2, 7-5. Next off court was two, where No. 108 Mathews of Notre Dame defeated No. 62 Sorbello, 7-5, 6-3, to tie it again.
ND took a 3-2 lead via court five as Krisik defeated Jennifer Meredith, 6-2, 7-6(1), before the clincher came on one as 16th-ranked Frilling beat out No. 11 Whoriskey in three sets, 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3 to close it out.
Notre Dame Head Coach Jay Louderback:
"Tennessee played well in doubles. We haven't been beaten up in doubles like that before. This is our second year in a row in the semifinals, and our kids have been through a lot of the big times. I think we are ready for whoever we play next."
Tennessee Head Coach Mike Patrick:
"I'm really proud of the kids. They fought really hard, but it just seemed like we came out tentative after doubles. During singles, we fought back and had opportunities. I'm just really proud of these kids. This experience is good for us. It gives us a good feel. Now our girls know what it's like being here after not being in the round of 16 for a few years."
