Columbus St. wins top-15 battle
CSU’s No. 17 Castillo wins ranked battle with No. 16 White
MORROW, Ga. – No. 11 Columbus State took four of six matches in singles action to defeat No. 9 Clayton State in their Peach Belt Conference opener. The Lady Cougars remain undefeated with a 3-0 mark while the Lakers now stand at 1-1.
The eighth-ranked doubles team of Viktoriya Semyrodenko and Ivana Krommelova pulled off a narrow 8-6 win for Clayton State against CSU's tandem of Loriane Favoretto and Madeline Johnson. CSU extended its lead to 2-0 when the 15th-ranked doubles pair of Marie Cercelletti and Katie White took down Tracy Castillo and Olivera Jokic 8-4. The Lady Cougars salvaged one victory in doubles action as Renata Paiva & Andrea Redrado took down Clayton State's duo of Jessica Budd & Martina Dedaj 8-6.
In singles action, No. 33 Semyrodenko defeated Favoretto 6-1, 6-1 while Cercelletti posted the only other victory for the Lakers in singles play 6-0, 6-3 against Jokic.
Columbus State's 17th-ranked Tracy Castillo overpowered No. 16 Katie White 6-1, 6-2 in the match's only contest between nationally ranked foes.
In the midst of Redrado (6-0, 6-3) and Paiva (6-2, 6-3) posting wins against their opponents for the Lady Cougars, the match came down to the battle between Madeline Johnson and Ivana Krommelova. Both sets were tightly contested with Johnson winning 6-3, 6-3 to give Columbus State the overall match victory.
