Barry races by Clark Atlanta
Bucs sweep first five points and led unfinished matches in rout
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Fourth-ranked Barry ran past Clark Atlanta 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The Bucs began the day by sweeping the doubles matches to go up 3-0. Barry only allowed the Panthers two games in doubles, all off of unforced Buccaneer errors.
At No. 2 doubles, the duo of Laura Bogut and Alex Gwizdowski made quick work of Kasey Dawson and Ivory Conley, winning 8-0. At No. 3 doubles, Julie Stas and Olivia Matuszak blanked Brionne Bachus and Cydney Reid 8-0. In the top doubles flight, Barbi Pocza and Angie Werschel defeated Munashe Makuni and Keva Palmer 8-2.
In singles action, the Bucs only needed two points to take the win.
Barry’s points came at No. 3 and No. 4. In the third flight, Matuszak blanked Bachus 6-0, 6-0 to grab the team's fourth point. Mona Monsour wrapped up the win, beating Conley 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth flight.
Barry also led in all the unfinished matches. At the top flight, No. 33 Werschel was up 4-3 in the first set against Makuni. At singles No. 2, Caroline Wendling led Palmer 5-2 in the first set. Gwizdowski was up a set 6-2, 2-0, on Dawson and Stas was ahead 6-0, 5-0 on Reid when the match finished.
