Lynn sweeps into Sweet 16
Fighting Knights advance to 15th consecutive NCAA tourney
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lynn advanced to its 15th consecutive NCAA Division II National Tournament by sweeping Rollins 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the Perper Tennis Complex. The Fighting Knights improve to 24-2 on the season and will play No. 2 BYU-Hawaii (27-0) in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, May 11, at 4:00 pm in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The Blue & White got out to a quick start in doubles play, taking a 3-0 lead into singles competition. The No. 2 tandem of Magdalena Ekert and Isabell Raich were the first to finish as they handed Lisa Loft and Stefania Tkach an 8-1 loss. Eleonora Iannozzi and Ioana Ivan, the nation’s fourth-ranked pair, defeated Margaret Junker and Kayli Ragsdale, 8-3, in the first flight while Andrea Berkova and Jessica Yanoff ousted Roshni Luthra and Allie Steele, 8-4, at No. 3.
Needing just two points to win the match, the Fighting Knights got those victories from Ekert at No. 1 and freshman Aleksandra Vukadinovic in the sixth spot. Ekert, the country’s seventh-ranked player, swiftly defeated Luthra, 6-1, 6-2 and Vukadinovic earned her first NCAA Tournament win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ashley Rosenberg.
In the four matches that went unfinished, Lynn took the opening set in three of them. Iannozzi was serving for the match after going up 6-0, 5-4 over Junker in the second spot while Ioana Ivan beat Tkach in the first set, 6-3, at No. 4. Berkova came down from a 4-1 deficit to take the opening set, 6-4, over Mariana Salvador in the fifth slot.
