PENSACOLA, Fla. — No. 8 West Florida dropped its home opener to NAIA Auburn Montgomery, 6-3 on Thursday. With the loss, UWF fell to 1-1 on the season, while Auburn Montgomery is 2-0.
Only two matches were played in doubles, as AUM defaulted at the No. 3 position. At the No. 1 line, Ana Veselinovic and Jade Curtis teamed to defeat UWF’s duo of Caitlyn Baines and Fernanda Amaral, 8-3.
Veselinovic and Curtis are the No. 3-ranked doubles tandem in the NAIA. Tiffany William and Kveta Hajkova defeated UWF’s Barbara Oliveira and Mariana Sonnervig 9-7 at No. 2.
Auburn Montgomery also defaulted at the No. 6 singles position. Veselinovic, who is the No. 1 singles player in the NAIA, blanked Oliveira, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 line. Oliveira is ranked No. 17 nationally. Hajkova, who is ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, only dropped two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Amaral at No. 4.
No. 5-ranked Curtis defeated UWF’s Baines, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot, to clinch the victory for AUM. At No. 3, William defeated Sonnervig in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-4. In the final match to be completed, West Florida’s Sheila Smiley defeated Hagar Caro, 6-4, 6-3.
