No. 8 Texas drills Iowa State
Longhorns strong in singles’ play with five victories
AMES, Iowa -- No. 8 Texas (8-4, 1-0 Big 12) claimed the doubles point and added five singles victories in a 6-1 win against Iowa State (3-11, 0-1 Big 12) on Friday afternoon.
Texas opened the doubles session with wins at the second and first doubles to take the doubles point. Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Krista Damico led off with an 8-4 win at second doubles against the Cyclones’ Jenna Langhorst and Simona Cacciuttolo.
Texas clinched the doubles point at the first slot, where the 23rd-ranked tandem of Lina Padegimaite and Noel Scott notched an 8-4 win against ISU’s Maria Macedo and Ksenia Pronina. The Cyclones claimed the remaining match at third doubles.
Padegimaite tacked on to the Texas lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Meghan Cassens at fourth singles. The Horns assumed a 3-0 lead when Elizabeth Begley dealt Langhorst a 6-0, 6-2 defeat at fifth singles.
Damico clinched the Longhorns’ victory at first singles, where she defeated Iowa State’s Macedo 6-4, 6-3 to move Texas to a 4-0 lead.
Iowa State cut the Texas lead to 4-1 with a three-set win at the third singles position before Scott pushed the Texas lead to 5-1 with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win against Iowa State’s Pronina at second singles.
The Longhorns’ Juliana Gajic finished off the Texas victory with an 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 win against the Cyclones’ Marie-Christine Chartier at sixth singles.
