WAMEGO, Kan. — No. 13 Baylor showed some grit on Sunday with a 4-3 win against Kansas State.
Baylor had to rely on the top of its line to earn a second consecutive Big 12 win. The Lady Bears have now claimed a 4-3 victory in four of their past eight matches.
Baylor quickly found itself in a 1-0 hole with a doubles point, but Diana Nakic, Nina Secerbegovic, Sona Novakova and Ema Burgic combined for a comeback effort with wins on Courts 1-4 in singles.
No. 27 Secerbegovic, No. 53 Novakova and Burgic were cruising to wins, but No. 13 Nakic was in a hole early against 30th-ranked Petra Niedermayerova, the defending Big 12 Player of the Year.
Secerbegovic claimed the first victory, a 6-0, 6-1 win against No. 83 Karla Bonacic, to tie the score at 1-1, and Novakova added a 6-2, 6-1 win against Carli Wischhoff for a short-lived BU lead.
KSU’s Carmen Borau Ramos finished a 6-1, 6-3 win against Abby Stainback on Court six, but the Lady Bears took the lead back shortly after with a win from Burgic on Court four. Burgic took down Marketa Trousilova 6-0, 6-1 to put Baylor in position to clinch the win.
The Wildcats responded with a win on Court five to put the pressure on the Nakic/Niedermayerova match, which was knotted at one set each and tied 5-5 in the third. Baylor’s Nakic then seized control with a service break and a hold of serve to take the set 7-5 and clinch the match.
In doubles, Baylor collected just one victory, a 9-8(2) win by Novakova and Nakic against Petra Chuda and Borau Ramos on Court two. On Court one, the previously undefeated Baylor duo of Secerbegovic and Burgic fell against Niedermayerova and Bonacic.
