SAVANNAH, Ga. — Third-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State clinched a share of its ninth consecutive Peach Belt Conference regular season title with a 9-0 victory against No. 11 Clayton State on Friday afternoon..
The Pirates (17-0, 11-0 PBC) have won 14 of 16 PBC regular season titles since the league went to a standardized schedule in 1997. The short-handed Lakers fell to 6-10 overall and 5-4 in the Peach Belt.
Armstrong also extended a pair of impressive streaks with the win as the Pirates have now won 109 consecutive home matches, dating back to 2003. Armstrong has also won 97 consecutive regular season Peach Belt matches as well, dating back to the same year.
With only five healthy players, the Lakers were forced to default at the third doubles spot, with Armstrong picking up wins in the other two doubles matches. The second-ranked doubles duo of Aleksandra Filipovski and Barbora Krtickova defeated Jessica Budd and Martina Dedaj 8-1, at No. 1 doubles. The 10th-ranked duo of Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa shook off an early 2-1 deficit to race past Marie Cecelletti and Charlotte Fabricius 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Armstrong then won all five of the competed singles matches in straight sets, with the No. 6 match defaulted because of the five-player lineup. No. 23 Kathleen Henry knocked off Fabricius 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while No. 30 Clara Perez beat Alyze’ Pagal 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
No. 20 Olga Kalodzitsa defeated Dedaj 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, then seventh-ranked Filipovski won eight consecutive games to close out Cercelletti 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. No. 24-ranked Hacke completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Budd at No. 4 singles.
