SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Colorado Mesa defeated host Augustana (S.D.) in the Central Region bracket on Sunday afternoon. The Mavericks won the dual 5-4 and will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships May 16-19 in Louisville, Ky. It marks the second time in CMU history (2012, 2011) the Mavs have advanced to the championships.
CMU started off the match notching the first win of the dual at number three doubles. Kristyn Wykert and Skyler Nelson defeated Augustana’s number three team of Adrienne Conley and Gabrielle Kachena 8-4. The Mavericks extended the lead to 2-0 with a 9-7 victory by the number two doubles team of Shannen McNamara and Kaylee Davis. McNamara and Davis were trailing 6-7 and rallied to win the next three games for the win. CMU swept the doubles action with a 9-8 tiebreak win by Kelleen Sera and Kaitlan Sera at number one doubles. The duo beat Kathrynn Jesperson and Michelle Wadas to push the Mav lead to 3-0 heading in to singles action.
Kaylee Davis moved the Mavs to within one victory (4-0) of winning the dual beating Heather Sullivan 6-4, 6-0 at number four singles.
Augustana tallied its first point in the dual (1-4) winning at number six singles. Jenna Helleberg beat CMU’s Rachel McLaughlin 6-4, 6-4. The Vikings closed the gap to 2-4 in the dual winning number two singles. Michelle Wadas beat Kaitlan Sera in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2.
The Vikings won their third singles match to trail 3-4 in the dual with a three set win at number three singles. CMU’s Shannen McNamara won the first set 7-6 and dropped the next two sets; 1-6, 3-6 to Augustana’s Hannah Gebauer.
Augustana tied the dual at 4-4 with a three set victory at number one singles. CMU’s Kelleen Sera fell in three sets to Kathrynn Jesperson, 6-7, 6-3, 2-6.
The dual match came down to number five singles where CMU’s Kristyn Wykert won the first set 7-5, dropped set number two, 6-7 and won the third and final set 6-1 against Heather Sullivan.
