Lynn captures South 2 Region title
Fighting Knights earn 16th consecutive regional championship
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- For the 16th consecutive year, Lynn won its regional final and advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament. This year, Lynn ( 20-4) composed a 5-1 victory against No. 9 West Florida on Thursday in the NCAA South 2 Region finals.
In every year of head coach Mike Perez’s 24 year stint at Lynn, the women’s tennis team has qualified for postseason play.
At the top doubles flight, Lynn’s No. 3 tandem of Ioana Ivan and Sabine Krause quickly jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage before the Argos’ No. 16 team of Caitlyn Baines and Sheila Smiley collected their first point. The Blue & White’s top team piled on an 8- 3 win to give the Knights their first point of the overall match.
The next two matches saw a tight battle between the Fighting Knights and the Argos. At number two doubles, Ana Kriz and Roxane Alexandru collected a 3-1 advantage before West Florida’s twin combo of Luiza Sonnervig and Mariana Sonnervig tied the match at 3-3.
Lynn’s number two doubles team then went up 5-4 but then surrendered the next two ponts and 6-5 tilt to West Florida in the match. Both teams held serve with West Florida grabbing the match in an 8-6 win to tie the overall match at 1-1.
In the third doubles flight, no team held more than a two-point advantage until Lynn’s Kim Przeszlowski and Andrea Berkova held serve to post the 9-7 win.
The Fighting Knights’ third doubles team fell behind West Florida’s Fernanda Amaral and Barbara Oliveira 7-6 but Berkova held serve to tie it up at 7-7. After breaking West Florida and amassing an 8-7 lead, Przeszlowski served the Knights to victory and gave Lynn a 2-1 overall match lead heading into singles.
Giving Lynn its third point of the overall match and first singles win, No. 19 Krause dismantled M. Sonnervig 6-1, 6-2 at the second singles flight in a match that took under two hours.
Berkova quickly took set one at number four singles 6-1 against Smiley but then found the match tied at 6-6 in set two. In the tiebreaker, Berkova dominated in a 7-1 tiebreak win to put Lynn within one point of a regional championship.
Alexandru captured a 6-3, 6-4 win at number six singles against Naomi Higa to clinch the victory for the Fighting Knights. Alexandru never trailed the entire match.
At the top singles flight, No. 3 Ivan nearly completed her match as she took set one 6-4 then went up 5-4 in the second set before the match reached completion.
Przeszlowski and Kriz were both still playing when the match ended. Przeszlowski was tied 6-6 at number three singles versus L. Sonnervig and Kriz fell 6-2 in set one then fell behind 5-2 in set two against Baines before the match was called.
