Vassar upends Mary Washington
Brewers will take on Johns Hopkins in third round Sunday
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Vassar advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Championships with a 5-0 win against Mary Washington at the Battleground Athletic Complex. This is the program's second trip to the round of 16, with the first coming in 2003.
The No. 24 Brewers (16-5) face No. 10 Johns Hopkins on Sunday. JHU had a first-round bye and defeated Hunter 5-0 in the second round.
Vassar swept doubles and clinched the 5-0 win with a pair of singles points. Ava Sadeghi delivered the deciding point for Vassar with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Michelle Meadows at No. 2 singles. After winning the first set 6-0, Jennifer Ruther won by retirement to put Vassar ahead 4-0.
In doubles, Sadeghi and Joy Backer knocked off Meadows and Jocelyn Lewis 8-3 at the No. 1 position. Jennifer Beckerman and Samantha Schapiro topped Lindsay Raulston and Casey Malcolm 8-4 at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3, Hannah Van Demark and Lindsay Kantor cruised 8-3 against Cassie Bowman and Anna Richman.
