CARY, N.C. — With a 5-1 victory against Johns Hopkins at the 2012 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship Monday afternoon, Chicago earned its fourth consecutive trip to the national semifinals.
Chicago (22-4) will take on Amherst College (18-3) in semifinal action Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. (ET). Amherst defeated Carnegie Mellon University 5-4 in quarterfinal play Monday.
The teams split the first two doubles matches. Senior Jennifer Kung and junior Linden Li gave the Maroons the early lead with an 8-5 win at No. 2, before the Blue Jays’ No. 3 tandem of Elaine Baik and Stephanie Rettig answered with an 8-6 win.
In the final doubles match, Chicago’s No. 1 duo of seniors Kendra Higgins and Carmen VacaGuzman overcame deficits of 4-2 and 6-4 to win 9-8, taking the tiebreaker 7-4.
Straight-set wins from Higgins (No. 1) and Kung (No. 2) in singles play put the Maroons on top 4-1.
Freshman Kelsey McGillis (Great Falls, Va./ Flint) closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles.
