MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – No. 3 Williams finished its first weekend of the spring 2-0 with a 7-2 win Sunday against Wesleyan.
Williams proved its depth in doubles play, as the top team of Maria Pylypiv and Kathleen Elkins lost 8-2, but the No. 2 and No. 3 teams both won. Nancy Worley and Veranika Li took down their opponents 8-2 at No. 2, and Alex Stone and Maya Hart earned an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Holding a 2-1 lead after singles, Williams pulled away during the singles session. Kathleen Elkins did not drop a game on the way to a 6-0, 6-0 win at number three. Alex Stone and Riqui McCoy each dropped only one game in their wins at numbers five and six, respectively. Kara Shoemaker and Nancy Worley were the other Eph winners.
“Playing two matches before spring break has been a great opportunity for us,” head coach Alison Swain said.
Williams opened up its spring season on Saturday with a 9-0 win against Skidmore.
Williams got off to a fast start in doubles play. The No. 3 team of Nancy Worley and Veronika Li won their pro-set 8-3 and Kara Shoemaker and Rebecca Curran won theirs 8-5. Kathleen Elkins and Maria Pylypiv gave Williams a 3-0 after winning their pro-set in a tie-break.
Williams was able to keep the momentum rolling through singles play, as all six won in consecutive sets. Elkins, Worley and Pylypiv each won one of their sets 6-0 at numbers 3, 4 and 5, respectively. First year Alex Stone got her first career spring season win at No. 6 6-3, 6-3.
