LAS VEGAS – Top-ranked and defending NCAA Division II national champion Armstrong Atlantic prevailed in a duel of top-five teams on Thursday, upending No. 3 Abilene Christian 8-1 at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
The Pirates (14-0) remained unbeaten on the 2013 season and also finished their trip out West with a perfect 3-0 mark, while Abilene Christian (12-5) finished its action in Las Vegas with a 1-2 mark after Thursday’s loss.
Armstrong won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The No. 6-ranked duo of Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa beat the No. 14-ranked duo of Hannah Kelley and Micah Hermsdorf 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while the duo of Clara Perez and Natasa Vukovic downed Kaysie Hermsdorf and Brittney Reed 9-7 at No. 3 doubles. Abilene Christian’s point came at No. 1 doubles as Laura and Julia Mongin notched an 8-4 win against top-ranked Aleksandra Filipovski and Barbora Krtickova.
The Pirates then won all six singles matches to collect the win against the Wildcats. No. 8-ranked Filipovski upset No. 5 Julia Mongin 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, while No. 2 Krtickova swept past No. 32 Michah Hermsdorf 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. No. 14 Hacke beat Laura Mongin 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles while No. 33 Perez won a third-set 10-point tiebreak against Kaysie Hermsdorf 4-6, 6-2 (10-3) at No. 4 singles.
No. 13 Kalodzitsa beat Kelley 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Vukovic finished the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Emily Conrad at No. 6 singles.
