CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Virginia defeated No. 1 North Carolina 4-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) action on Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The win was Virginia's first against a top-ranked opponent in program history.

Virginia also defeated North Carolina Central 6-0, improving to 10-7 overall and 4-1 in the ACC after the two-match sweep. North Carolina fell to 17-2, 3-1, while North Carolina Central dropped to 10-5.

The Cavaliers claimed the doubles point against North Carolina and received singles wins from juniors Caryssa Peretz and Julia Elbaba, and the match-clinching win from co-captain Erin Vierra.

The Cavaliers rallied for the important doubles point after the Tar Heels opened with a win at No. 3. Vierra and freshman Stephanie Nauta beat No. 42 Caroline Price and Whitney Kay 8-6 at No. 1 and Elbaba and senior Hana Tomljanovic clinched the point with an 8-6 win against Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Tessa Lyons at No. 2.

North Carolina tied the match at one as No. 25 Kay defeated Li Xi 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Peretz gave UVa a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-3 against Ashley Dai at No. 6 and Elbaba increased the lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 win against No. 43 Zoe De Bruycker at No. 2.

No. 9 Suarez-Malaguti beat Nauta 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 and North Carolina tied the match at three with Price's 6-0, 7-6 win against Tomljanovic at No. 4.

Vierra clinched the win with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win against Kate Vialle at No. 5 singles.

Virginia defeated North Carolina Central 6-0 as Elbaba, Xi, Tomljanovic, Peretz, Vierra and Maria Fuccillo posted singles wins.
