No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic wins 10th consecutive PBC championship
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Top-ranked and top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State completed a decade of dominance in the Peach Belt Conference by capturing the school's 10th consecutive PBC Tournament title on Sunday morning with a 5-0 win against No. 6 Columbus State at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.
The Pirates (24-1) have won the last 10 regular-season PBC titles and added a 10th consecutive league tournament crown to that ledger in blanking the Cougars (20-3), who have lost to just two teams this season -- the top-ranked Pirates twice and No. 4 BYU-Hawaii.
Armstrong has won 12 of 14 PBC tournament titles since the league abandoned the flighted format after the 1999 season and the Pirates have won 19 of 22 overall tournament titles in league history.
The Pirates got off to a good start against the Cougars by sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 2 doubles duo of Barbora Krtickova and Aleksandra Filipovski downed the No. 7 duo of Paola Cigui and Carolin Weikard 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. No. 6 Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa claimed an 8-2 win against Laura Chapman and Olivera Jokic at No. 2 doubles, while Clara Perez and Natasa Vukovic beat Andrea Redrado and Renata Paiva 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Armstrong then clinched the title with No. 11 Hacke's 6-2, 6-1 win against Chapman at No. 4 singles and No. 3 Krtickova's 7-6 (2), 6-1 win against No. 45 Jokic at No. 3 singles.
Krtickova was named the 2013 PBC Tournament Singles MVP, while Krtickova and Filipovski were named the 2013 PBC Tournament Doubles MVPs.
By virtue of the tournament title, Armstrong will now advance to the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championship held on April 27-29 in an attempt to defend its 2012 national championship.
