McCormick's three-set victory clinches first round win for Indiana (Pa.)
INDIANA, Pa. -- Abby McCormick scored a three-set win in singles play to help lift IUP to a 5-3 victory against Shaw in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday at the Maple Street Courts.
McCormick's win came at number three as she defeated Michelle Hart 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 to send the Crimson Hawks to the next round.
IUP, the second seed in the Atlantic Region, came out of doubles with a 2-1 lead after grabbing wins at the second and third spots.
McCormick and Alanna McFail teamed for an easy 8-0 win at three over Desiree Bell and Menel Bencheikh while Tanya Timko and Emilia Osborne defeated Claudia Silva and Gislaine Farias 8-5 at two. At one, Hart and Jessica Medina got the best of Katie Eaton and Erika Schnaas by a score of 8-6.
The Crimson Hawks picked up a pair of quick shutout wins in singles play at five and six to stretch their lead to 4-1.
Ranvita Mahto got the win at six, defeating Bencheikh 6-0, 6-0 while Schnaas also beat Bell 6-0, 6-0 at five.
Shaw, the seventh-ranked team in the region, rallied with two wins of its own to narrow the score to 4-3. Medina defeated Timko 6-0, 6-2 at number two while Farias picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win over Osborne at number four.
McCormick's match at three and Eaton's match at one each went into the third set simultaneously with IUP needing a victory in just one of those matches to clinch the win. Eaton's match ended unfinished 7-5, 0-6, 3-2.
The Crimson Hawks now move on to the second round as they'll face third-seeded West Virginia State on Sunday.
