NYIT eases past Chestnut Hill into Round of 16 for first time in program history
EASTON, Mass. -- NYIT achieved another program first Sunday afternoon as the Bears advance to the Division II Round of 16 with a 5-0 victory against Chestnut Hill. Graduate student Nelly Ciolkowski clinched the match win with a triumph at first singles.
NYIT swept doubles play to lead 3-0. Sara Burinato and Rocio Benavent topped Kelly Dennis and Morgan Oechsle 8-4 at second doubles for the first point of the contest. Ciolkowski and Madalina Florea, ranked No. 20 in the nation, then defeated Nastia Shcherbakova and Maria Parapouras 8-4 at first doubles. Gaby Rodriguez and Valeria Savina then battle through a tiebreaker to win 9-8(3).
The Bears needed just two more points to advance and those points came at first and second singles. No. 43 Burinato tallied the fourth point of the match with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Dinnis at second singles and No. 10 Ciolkowski dominated Shcherbakova 6-0, 6-2 at first singles for the match win.
NYIT faced Hawaii Pacific in the round of 16 on May 8.
