Armstrong Atlantic breezes past Northwood (Mich.) in Round 1
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Defending NCAA Division II national champion Armstrong Atlantic advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 with a 5-0 win against Northwood (Mich.) on Wednesday.
The win sets up a showdown between the Pirates (27-1) and unbeaten Barry, which downed Northeastern State 5-0. The two teams will meet in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Armstrong swept the doubles matches as No. 2-ranked Aleksandra Filipovski and Barbora Krtickova downed No. 25-ranked Susana Alcaraz and Nastya Puchkina 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while No. 5-ranked Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa downed Nikoletta Kaposzta and Ayana Kobayashi 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
The duo of Clara Perez and Natasa Vukovic overcame an early deficit to outlast Inesa Asatryan and Margarita Asatryan 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
The Pirates then picked up a pair of straight-set wins to clinch the match as No. 17-ranked Hacke beat Inesa Asaatryan 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and No. 27-ranked Kalodzitsa beat Kaposzta 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
The matchup on Thursday will feature the past five national champions in women's tennis - the Pirates won in 2008-10 and 2012, while Barry won in 2011.
