Washington & Lee sweeps up against Methodist 5-0 in NCAA first-round action
ATLANTA -- Washington and Lee flew past Methodist 5-0 in first-round action of the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday, hosted by Emory.
The Generals dropped just two points in sweeping all three doubles matches to enter singles with a 3-0 advantage. W&L then won at No. 1 and 5 singles to claim the 5-0 victory.
Sophomore Sonja Meighan and junior Chelsea Mixson each registered two wins on the day. Meighan won at No. 1 doubles 8-1 with classmate Patricia Kirkland and went on to take down Katherine Meindl 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Mixson's 6-0, 6-0 win against Hillary Petruska at No. 5 singles was the match-winner for the Generals and she also teamed up with sophomore Meghan Buell for the No. 2 doubles win (8-1).
With the win, W&L improved to 19-7 on the year, while the Monarchs fell to 20-3 overall.
The Generals advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament and will face Sewanee on Saturday.
